The Great Sphinx is the largest monolithic sculpture in the world, carved from the living limestone of the Giza plateau, its body stretching 73 metres. Geologist Robert Schoch has formally documented that the weathering profile on the Sphinx enclosure walls is consistent with rainfall erosion rather than wind and sand, suggesting the monument predates the last period of significant rainfall in the Sahara by a considerable margin. A documented chamber exists beneath the Sphinx. The Sphinx faces due east toward the equinox sunrise, a solar alignment whose precision was not accidental.
