Chartres Cathedral is built over a sacred site occupied since before recorded history, its crypt the oldest surviving ecclesiastical space in France, and its astronomical programme one of the most formally documented in the Gothic tradition. A thin beam of light enters through a specific floor tile at noon on the summer solstice, a solar alignment built into the cathedral design. The acoustic properties of the nave, formally measured, produce a reverberation environment that researchers have connected to the specific character of Gregorian plainchant. The labyrinth on the nave floor, 11 circuits of 13 metres diameter, encodes a geometric programme whose full logic has not been established.
