A Khmer sanctuary standing in the flat landscape of the Mekong region, Prasat Hong Nang Sida is less visited than Wat Phou but no less precise. The stonework displays a cluster of related anomalies: limestone blocks joined without mortar to tolerances that have survived centuries of seismic activity and seasonal flooding, T-shaped metal clamp recesses cut into the joining faces of adjacent blocks as deliberate reinforcement, and multi-cornered polygonal blocks individually fitted in interlocking courses. Its entrance is oriented to the winter solstice sunrise, placing this relatively obscure Khmer temple within the same astronomical tradition as monuments across three continents.
