The Museo Nacional de Antropología in Mexico City is the most important collection of pre-Columbian material culture in the world. The Aztec Sun Stone, the Maya stellae, the Olmec colossal heads, the Zapotec jade, and the artefacts from Teotihuacan together constitute an unmatched record of the civilisations of Mesoamerica. For any visitor to the sites documented in the Mexico section of this catalogue, the museum provides the cultural, chronological, and artefactual context without which the standing monuments are incomplete. The building itself, designed by Pedro Ramírez Vázquez and completed in 1964, is a significant architectural achievement.
