The Ollantaytambo quarry on the Cachicata plateau across the Urubamba River from the main site preserves the most direct evidence in the Inca catalogue for the scale of the construction logistics challenge. Massive porphyry blocks in various stages of preparation are scattered across the mountain slope, some still attached to the parent rock, some abandoned mid-transport on the ancient ramp system descending to the river crossing. The surface preparation visible on the finished faces of the abandoned blocks demonstrates the precision of the intended end result. The stairways cut into the quarry face descend to surfaces where the infrastructure they served has entirely disappeared.

Disconnected Stairs

The Cachicata quarry area and its approach slopes contain rock-cut steps and carved surfaces integrated into the granite outcrops that have no surviving functional context — steps ascending to ledges where the associated Inca infrastructure has long since collapsed or been removed, and carved approach routes that connected the quarry operations to the descent toward the river crossing but whose upper and lower terminations are no longer architecturally connected to anything. In a quarry site abandoned mid-operation in 1440 CE, every piece of infrastructure — stairways, ramps, carved approach surfaces — was disconnected from its functional purpose at the moment of abandonment and has remained so for nearly six centuries.

Large Monoliths

The Cachicata quarry contains multiple rose granite blocks abandoned at various stages of the transport route — partially extracted from the parent rock, partially dressed, and in several cases left on the approach slopes to Ollantaytambo where they have rested for approximately 580 years. These abandoned blocks, estimated at 50–70 tons each, are the most physically direct evidence of the transport challenge the quarry represents: they are the blocks that did not make it. Their positions along the transport route — some still at the quarry face, some partway down the slope, some near the river crossing — preserve the logistics of the operation frozen at the moment of abandonment in 1440 CE. The quarry itself shows the extraction methodology in exposed form: channels cut around block perimeters to isolate them from the parent rock, wedge slots at intervals along the separation lines, and partially extracted blocks still attached at one or more faces. The extraction technique is documented and visible, but the mechanism by which 50–70 ton blocks were subsequently transported 6 kilometres across a valley and 600 metres up a mountain to the fortress remains without a demonstrated conventional explanation.

Machined Characteristics

The quarry faces and the surfaces of partially dressed blocks at Cachicata display tool marks in hard rose granite whose character merits attention. The channels cut around blocks to separate them from the parent rock show a consistency of depth and width — maintained across several metres of continuous cut in extremely hard stone — that the conventional Inca bronze tool and stone percussion explanation handles with difficulty at this scale and hardness. Jean-Pierre Protzen's experimental archaeology work at Ollantaytambo and Cachicata — the most systematic study of Inca stone working techniques — established that the quarrying and dressing methods were achievable with available tools but required time and effort vastly exceeding what the construction programme's timeline allows. The surfaces of partially dressed blocks show flat faces prepared across large areas in granite — a harder stone than the andesite used at most Cusco-region sites — with a consistency that the available bronze and stone toolkit produces only with difficulty and at the upper edge of its capability.
