Two interpretations are possible, and both are remarkable.
If the ruts predate the tomb entrances — if the groove tracks were already cut into the bedrock surface before the Domus de Janas chambers were carved beneath them — then wheeled vehicle traffic was using this exact surface before 3500 BCE, placing wheeled transport on Sardinia in a period the conventional timeline does not accommodate. The earliest accepted evidence for wheeled vehicles in Europe dates to approximately 3500 BCE in Eastern Europe and the Near East — Sardinia at the same period, with groove tracks crossing what would become tomb entrances, is not where the conventional chronology places early wheel use.
If the ruts postdate the tombs — if they were cut by vehicles crossing the site after the tombs were already in use — then the specific problem is different but equally pointed. Vehicles were crossing active burial sites, running their wheels directly over the entrances to chambers containing the ancestral dead.
