Belevi is a Hellenistic mausoleum near Ephesus that is unique in the catalogue: its lower half is carved from the natural limestone hillside, its upper half constructed in marble above the carved base, the boundary between geological formation and built structure genuinely ambiguous at ground level. A rock-cut burial chamber at the base of the podium contained a marble sarcophagus of exceptional quality decorated with carved reliefs on all four sides. Metal clamp recesses reinforce the marble joints against the seismic risk of the Aegean coast. Projecting stone bosses on the bedrock podium retain their original function without explanation.
