The most celebrated naveta in the world — a monument shaped like an upturned boat, built without mortar from massive carved limestone slabs, used as a collective tomb for over a century between approximately 1100 and 800 BCE. Over one hundred individuals were buried here, their remains pushed aside for successive burials over generations. The entrance faces west, oriented toward the setting sun. Astronomical Alignment

The entrance of the Naveta d'es Tudons faces west — explicitly oriented toward the setting sun. This is not incidental: the west-facing orientation is documented in the site's own interpretive material as a deliberate design feature, placing the threshold between the living world and the burial chamber at the point where the sun descends each evening. The solar orientation of this collective tomb connects it to the broader Mediterranean tradition of aligning funerary monuments to the solar cycle.

Heavy Erosion

The naveta's limestone surfaces display heavy erosion across all exposed faces. Officially dated to c. 1300–800 BCE, the site's surface dissolution and edge rounding are consistent with great antiquity, though whether the erosion exceeds what this age would predict in Menorca's climate — or reflects an earlier construction phase — has not been formally studied. The monument's UNESCO designation rests on the official dating, but the physical weathering is pronounced.

Large Monoliths

The naveta's construction uses limestone slabs of substantial individual weight, particularly in the wall courses and the flat roof slabs that span the interior chamber. The roofing stones — each a single slab spanning the full width of the chamber — are the largest elements in the structure and required lifting to height without any surviving evidence of the mechanical means used. Moving and positioning slabs of this scale at a site with no obvious heavy-load approach route raises the same logistical questions the Large Monolith tag is designed to flag.

Mortarless Precision

The Naveta d'es Tudons is built without mortar throughout — outer walls, inner chamber walls, and the massive flat stone slabs that form the middle floor and roof are all held in place by the precision of their fitting and the weight distribution of the stones above. The corbelled interior chamber, where successive generations of the dead were placed, required careful calculation of stone projection and load — achieved entirely without binding agents.

Polygonal Jigsaw

The naveta's walls are constructed from large carved limestone slabs fitted closely together, with small wedge-shaped stones used to fill gaps — a technique that, in the less weathered sections, shows tighter joint tolerances than casual dry-stone construction would produce. As with the other Talayotic monuments on Menorca, heavy surface erosion makes the original standard of fitting difficult to assess fully; the monument's structural integrity across three millennia of Mediterranean exposure implies a more refined original fit than is immediately visible.

Stone Circles / Henges

The naveta's horseshoe-shaped form — a curved rear apse with a straight entrance wall — defines a sacred enclosed space in the same formal tradition as henges and stone circle precincts. The elongated horseshoe orientated toward the setting sun creates a directed ceremonial approach, with the enclosing walls channelling movement toward the entrance in the same spatial logic as a henge monument. As with Na Comerma de Sa Garita, classification here acknowledges the shared formal vocabulary of enclosed megalithic sacred space rather than the circular form specifically.
