The name — llises means smooth in Catalan — refers to the flat-faced character of the stones. As a pre-Talayotic monument (c. 3000–2000 BCE), the dolmen predates Menorca's characteristic Bronze Age architecture by at least a millennium and belongs to the broader Atlantic and Mediterranean megalithic tradition that produced comparable structures from Ireland to the Caucasus. Its presence on Menorca confirms that the island was within the cultural and possibly the maritime network of the wider megalithic world long before the Talayotic culture that would come to define the island's prehistoric identity.

Heavy Erosion

As one of Menorca's pre-Talayotic monuments (c. 3000–2000 BCE), the dolmen's capstone and orthostats display weathering consistent with its status as among the island's oldest surviving stone works. Surface dissolution on the exposed limestone faces is pronounced and measurably deeper than on the younger Talayotic structures elsewhere on Menorca — consistent with, though not proof of, the official age attribution.

Large Monoliths

The dolmen's capstone is a single horizontal slab of limestone resting on two or more vertical orthostats — by definition a large monolith in the most literal sense. Its weight, while likely in the lower range of the Large Monolith category (estimated single-digit tonnes), is sufficient that its placement cannot be explained by casual effort. As one of Menorca's oldest stone structures — predating the Talayotic tradition by at least a millennium — the capstone placement belongs to an early horizon of megalithic construction whose logistics predate any local tradition of organised quarrying we can document.

Mortarless Precision

The dolmen's orthostats support a massive horizontal capstone with no mortar, no fixing mechanism, and no structural adhesive of any kind. Stability relies entirely on the placement, contact area, and weight distribution of the stones. That a single unsupported horizontal slab has remained in position over four to five millennia of seismic activity, weathering, and vegetation growth is itself a structural argument for the quality of the original placement.
